E-commerce and online stores - that's how we started!
The first project we ever created was an online store, back in 1999! This store used an industry "standard" MIVA Merchant shopping cart. Horribly inflexible and a coding and management nightmare. We changed this site to a custom built ASP powered shopping cart; developed by us from the ground up (of course it's out-dated now)!
Transaction or "success" fees?
Sure things have changed and there are many options to choose from including eBay, Amazon, Yahoo, etc. The introductory fees may be lower then a custom solution, but in the long run they cost more. Most of the major e-commerce platform providers today charge so called "success" fees. These fees are charged for EVERY order placed on your store. They can range from as low as 0.75% to as high as 25%! That is before payment processing fees! Here are a few well known examples:
